There are many things we can do to save our environment and most of it can be done easily in our everyday life. Start from now and take it as a good habit for a greener future.

A few things we can do in hall to save our environment:

  • Turn down or shut off your water heater when you will be away.
  • Turn off unneeded lights even when leaving a room for a short time.
  • Use e-mail instead of paper correspondence.

Green Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner! Some have prepared christmas gifts, some are still running around for last-minute Christmas Sale and gift shopping. Whichever situation you’re in, there are always something you can do to contribute to our mother nature. Here are some useful tips compiled from personal past experiences and gazettelive website.

Cards, wrapping and decoration

Decorating christmas tree using blinking lights? Get LED lights which, as well as lasting longer than conventional lights, use 80% less energy.

Reuse your decorations rather than buying new – if you do buy new, buy sturdy ones that will last or have a go at making your own decorations from scrap materials.

Buy recycled wrapping paper and use string or ribbon on parcels, which can be reused, instead of sticky tape.

Wrapping paper is often treated, coloured and sometimes covered in glitter which isn’t easy to recycle – choose cards and wrapping which contain recycled paper.

Send your Christmas greetings by e-card instead of buying Christmas cards.

Food and drink

Avoid items with unnecessary packaging and wrapping or buy stuff you know you can recycle.

Buy drinks – like soft drinks or wine for example – in bigger bottles or containers to cut down on waste.

Avoid paper plates, cups and serviettes that just get thrown away: it might mean more washing up but at least there will be green benefits.

Shopping

Reuse your carrier bags in the supermarket each time you go.

Combine small purchases into the existing carrier bags you’re carrying.

Plan ahead: what to buy, where to get it, and plan how to get those items with minimal travel distance.

After Christmas

Make an effort to put all of your bottles, cans, tins, cardboard and paper in the recycling containers provided by many local councils.

Hello!

Hello!

Welcome to the blog of KR Environment Committee 08/09. It’s been an eventful semester for both the committee and the hall. Our comm has already decided on the main objectives of the year and we hope to get the support of all residents for our initiatives. The main aim of this blog is to inform about the activities of our comm, our initiatives, to act as a platform for comm bonding and to post and discuss everything related to environmental issues. =)

Updates so far:

  1. The first “Bring Your Own Container Day” was successfully implemented this Tuesday. Kudos to I/Cs Jovita and Anastasya =) A repeat of the event will be done on the coming Tuesday. No styrofoam packaging will be provided and residents are advised to bring their own containers. The comm will sell REUSABLE and MICROWAVEABLE containers for those who do not own containers.

Look out for the posters and other iniatives from the committee soon =)

Regards,

Wei Jian

Hello world!

This is a beautiful planet and not at all fragile. Earth can withstand significant volcanic eruptions, tectonic cataclysms, and ice ages. But this canny, intelligent, prolific, and extremely self-centered human creature had proven himself capable of more destruction of life than Mother Nature herself… We’ve got to be stopped.
